| Name: | An Shouji (formerly Tsukasa) |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1980-08-10 |
Name: An Shouji
Alias: Tsukasa
Series: .hack//SIGN
Age: 16
Birthday: August 30th (Made up, but I doubt she wants to celebrate it anyway)
Alignment: Neutral Good
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Homosexual
Species: Human
Appearance: You get some pictures because I'm way too lazy to be detailed here after that history.
Personality: An is quiet and more than a little depressing, really. She used to block out everyone else both out of fear of being hurt more and because she felt people couldn't understand what she'd been through. This too causes her to be more than a little stubborn towards her own opinions... and not let anyone inside her head. She's been recovering steadily, but her youth left some deep scars in her which probably won't ever completely heal. She's nice and tries to be helpful whenever able (because An is kindhearted at the core), and since her adventures in The World completed she's tried to smile more. But at the same time, unless Mariko is involved, it's often a fleeting smile which will fade out soon enough.
Aside from this, however, she has many complexes. The abuse she suffered as a child has made her have an extreme stigma against the idea of a 'father' figure, and has made her somewhat phobic of adult males... particularly overly forward ones. Because her father tried to make her act male as much as possible, An can come off as something of a tomboy, though it's really not her intention to do so. She can't hate people, even if she says she does (and even if she thinks she does), under more circumstances because of her need to try to find people to relate to her -- the only person she really hates (and quite acutely at that) is her father.
An also has something of a penchant for escapism. It's gotten better, but that was what took her to The World in the first place, and why she chose Tsukasa, a male avatar. Nowadays her main escapism is though Mariko, conversations with her, and things like that.
History: An has lived an extremely unfortunate life, to say the least. Her mother died when she was quite young, leaving her with only her abusive and more than a little unhinged father to 'care' for her. She didn't have any real toys or cosmetics or the like growing up, and was often beaten and/or verbally abused. She was similarly emotionally tormented, such as a very scarring incident in which she tried to care for a cat only to have her father take it away and kill it. She was raised with a supreme sense of female inferiority; often dressing as a boy and having boyish hair. This continued all the way until she was in high school.
Then, An discovered The World, an online game. It'd be a cold day in hell before her father let her do something like that at home, so he accessed from public places -- at first the trial-versions in stores, then later Internet cafes and the like. She loved the 'freedom' she could feel in The World, and from that desire, Tsukasa the Wave Master was born. Tsukasa, An's avatar, was male. She wanted to escape the world she was in and re-invent herself as a boy... because that might make her less likely to be treated poorly there, right? Well, that was her thought process.
Well, unfortunately for her, someone (well, something) else decided that she was the perfect specimen for her (its) plot. Namely, the infamous program known as Morganna Mode Gone. This was the program which was supposed to look over The World and nurture Aura, the girl who was supposed to be born into it. Well, Morganna went a little psycho and didn't want Aura to be born, 'cus that would make her obsolete. So she took An's mind and implanted it into her character. An officially became Tsukasa with little memory of her (his) life outside The World. Tsukasa's emotions Morganna linked to Aura's awakening, figuring that and emo and antisocial kid like An would never be open or positive enough to awaken Aura, who would become corrupted by An's mass of negative emotional data.
Tsukasa was recruited by Macha, a cat-like creature (who is actually one of the eight phases) that posed as a friendly NPC and would one day become the PC Mia who would fight alongside Kite. Err, anyway, Macha took Tsukasa to the bottom of a dungeon, where her was infected by Morganna and made unable to log out. For his protection he was given a guardian -- a hax-worthy undefeatable monster which Tsukasa could summon to any field in The World and could beat the snot out of pretty much everyone. Tsukasa then just... wandered. Eventually, he caught the attention of many people, including the Crimson Knights, who assumed him a notable hacker due to his uncanny system-breaking abilities and two PCs called Mimiru and Bear. Whereas the Crimson Knights (particularly the head lap-dog of them, Silver Knight) would delete him, Mimiru and Bear thought his story of being unable to log out was worrying, and in their own ways tried to help Tsukasa -- Mimiru in befriending him, and Bear in researching who Tsukasa might be in the real world.
Additionally, his strange existence in general garnered the attention of those that might seek out the legendary Key of Twilight, such as the PKer Sora, a PC named BT, and the former founder of the Crimson Knights, Crim. So naturally, Tsukasa's existence makes this huge-ass fiasco which results in some people finding an AI recording of the creator of the world, which Tsukasa comes to understand refers to Aura, the sleeping girl he met back in Morganna's field. While Macha tries to delete this memory from Tsukasa, he still recalls it later. And though he got most if not all of his memories nuked of his time in reality, they steadily start to return, sometimes with the prompting of Bear, who had discovered where An is.
During this time, Tsukasa also got to know the leader of the Crimson Knights, Subaru, and they have this budding romantic thing going while she's facing her own issues (everyone in SIGN sans perhaps Mimiru has some issue) and eventually Tsukasa goes to show her Aura. Well, this leads to two different 'oshi-' moments -- one of them is that Morganna data-drains Tsukasa as a punishment for doing that, nearly deleting him outright (but she failed at it, so he recovers) and the other is that back in reality An's dad pulls the plug on her medical machines, but the doctors plug her back in before she (and Tsukasa) die. Anyway, more stuff goes down, and eventually we get to the climax, where Tsukasa's pretty much figured out what the hell is going on and who he (she) is, and defies Morganna.
Well, Morganna is pretty much pissed, so she summons Skeith, the Terror of Death, to pwn Tsukasa and everyone else. Sora, that PKer, basically gets himself killed to buy everyone some time to escape, but it isn't much. In the end, they nuke Skeith by way of luring him into Net Slum, which Helba promptly deletes with Skeith still in there, presumably destroying him (though as the games show, Skeith survives that, but Liminality and Zero both imply that Skeith fused with the data-drained Sora to rez himself, but anyway---) So because Tsukasa defiantly stood up to Morganna, that makes enough positive emotion for Aura to wake up, and because they one-up Morganna, Tsukasa can now log out.
Well, An returns the real world as a basic dream come true moment. Her dad is either pending trial or otherwise looses custody of her for his stunt as the hospital, Bear's real self (Ryo) becomes An's legal guardian, she she meets the player behind Subaru -- Minako. Her and Minako start dating after that, but they only really have had one real date at the point I'm taking An from... because Ryo paid for An to go to the fairly distant boarding school. It's been about two months since the incident with The World, and her and Minako talk on the hone daily basically, and E-mail, write letters, etc. The point is she thought her little nightmare well over.
This is where Luceti proves to be a wake up.
Interesting Information: An, despite the fact that Tsukasa was a Wave Master, and therefore able to use magic, is a normal human because she's not in her PC body. Nothing special here.
